Thinking about Ideas/Initial Film Research
I loved watching the different films! I think this was a great way for me to collect some initial research based on what I learned. I watched the 3 films on Kanopy: Company Town, From Flint: Voices from a Poisoned City, and Plastic Planet as well as the other links that were given to us. Out of these additional materials, my favorite film was The Story of Stuff. I think this video did a great job of explaining the comprehensive view of how materials are made, why, where they do, how they affect us, etc. (Please see below for my notes on the films)
One piece of information that has truly stuck with me throughout all of the films relates to plastic. This is something I am considering including in my plastic poster. The fact that the collective amount of all plastic made since the beginning of time could wrap around the whole Earth seven times. I think presenting this visually through illustration or in a diagram could be a really powerful visual. By just thinking about it we can't comprehend that amount of plastic but I think using this as a visual comparison on a poster could really shock people and show just how much plastic production our planet makes and the relative size between the two. I think that is how I want my posters to resonate with the audience. I feel that when it comes to environmental issues, people won't make change unless they are moved by something. If my poster can illustrate shocking statistics about the state of our planet, then I hope that would prompt the audience to want to make some changes in their life. It is hard to grasp the effects that humans have over the environment when it is not explicitly explained and presented because we can feel removed from it. If we are not physically experiencing any deterioration of our planet YET then we can believe it exists far away from us and we are untouchable. But by using design and specifically these posters, I hope that I can present these issues as a present problem that needs attention NOW. That is my overall goal, initial thoughts. I am really excited to continue thinking about this as I flesh out my proposal further (I have started it).
