Long Time No See

Image
Have made a ton of progress on my posters since I last posted. All 6 now have a realized idea even though some are still far from done. My last 3 posters are focusing on plastic: how toxic chemicals in plastic products can harm humans, Fire: Forest fires destroying communities and the environment when they are ill advised and accidental, and Animal Agriculture: negatively affecting the environment and local farmers who are actually treating animals humanely and losing their businesses. See my poster updates below!  Some changes I'm going to make moving forward: -need to refine my last 2 in terms of the illustrations and photos being chosen -work on the QR code/Umich logo and name placement so they are all more readable -color: i just want to work on this more, so far the colors were a bit arbitrarily chosen

Progress and Finalization!

Image
Slowly and steadily finalizing my first three posters! I think the most progress I have made this week has been in terms of typography. I'm using these three posters as the outline for my next three so I'm trying to nail down the design of these first before I move onto others, that way my posters can continue to be consistent. This week I have added some more type that provides some more context and insight into the problems created by each area of pollution. I have started in the water poster with insights from the World Health Organization. The text is the same brown as the murky water to blend in with the texture and truly illustrate how these negative affects are a direct result of contaminated drinking water. Some other changes I have made this week has been adding the QR codes which will link to a google doc of resources that I have begun compiling. I have also made some of my illustrations more realized than before. I have rounded out the smokestacks and included more ...

Some New Realizations

Image
This week were our first individual meetings with Franc! I met with him to discuss my new iterations which I have made progress on. Before our meeting I was a bit stuck because I was not super happy with the direction I was going in but now I think I have a clear understanding. Before my Franc meeting I had added some realism photos to the bottom portion of my posters as a way to clearly articulate the textures I was going for but now have realized them as a way to abstract these issues in a binary that is illustrated through this difference- realism vs. abstraction- with the realism being the issue and the abstraction representing the "good" surface level. In my posters everything represents a duality. I am going to alter my proposal with this new information.  Some notes I'm going to work on; Franc brought up a good point that my posters, though the imagery is there, are lacking in some contextual information. So this is what I'm going to work on for next week-addi...

2nd iteration + the series continues

Image
So this week I have made progress in that I have more poster drafts! BUT I still think I have a ways to go in developing my intent. What's interesting is that I had a similar problem in my Information Design class. My intent was in my head but it wasn't articulating on paper, so I'm almost there. I definitely know what I want to say through these posters but it isn't coming across as clearly to the viewer. It's like my posters tell half the story while the rest of it is in my head. I got some great feedback this week though that I'm going to take with me as I continue my iterations for next week. ** disclaimer wasn't necessarily happy with the outcome of these iterations BUT felt like they were necessary "experiments" in my process and that I have definitely made progress in pushing the idea Some of my favorite notes were that:  -the way water was represented in my first iteration might be even better.  I think this had to do with my fixation on i...

1st Draft- drinking water

Image
Here is my first draft of my poster focusing on water! I'm highlighting that access to safe drinking water is a human right. I was really influenced/inspired by a comment made during critique last week that I think shaped my direction for this poster. Someone had brought up that my posters focused on things that are somewhat hidden, or under the surface. That idea made me think about how I could emphasize this dichotomy between the hidden and the aware. The bottom portion is what people tend to be unaware of: in this case unsafe drinking water than can lead to health issues and complications. On top is supposed to be clean, safe drinking water which there is a misconception that this is readily available to everyone. Though because of pollution, and because water is a finite natural resource that we are depleting. I had also separated the word "safe" from "drinking water" to imply that they are not synonymous.  Some notes from critique that I plan on using for ...

Yay Sketches!

Image
I have started sketching!! I definitely need to dig deeper than these iterations but definitely a good start and a good way for me to start visually articulating my ideas. Until this point I was thinking too abstractly and not sure how to visualize this. In class today I explained my poster design series as representing the human side of these environmental issues-not just how they affect the planet but how they affect the human beings involved. I think this is a good way to describe my approach. During small group critique, some of my peers pointed out that my ideas come from the behind-the-scenes aspects of environmental issues, for example the things that you don't necessarily see have a direct effect. I think this is interesting because this is exactly what I was focusing on from the beginning. My initial thoughts centered around how it is easy for people to feel removed from these issues when they are not necessarily SEEING how they are affecting them. I want my posters to po...

Proposal Time!!!

This is a bit late but I had a migraine all weekend and was not able to flush it out :/ But here it is! It is definitely subject to change as things are still flexible. It will be updated at the end of the project as it will be a running doc. Enjoy! The Client:  Our client for this project is Greenpeace. Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization (an NGO) that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. These posters will act as public service announcements on behalf of Greenpeace to share our environment’s story and how our actions as humans can help to change the course of our planet’s future.  (can add more if we meet with Greenpeace) The Audience:  Greenpeace’s audience is the larger public who are interested in helping the environment as well as those less knowledgeable. Greenpeace’s many campaigns centered around crucial envir...
